EMMA JAMES’ QUANDARY THAT NIGHT TWO YEARS BEFORE ENTANGLED LOVE:

I love my husband, adore him. Yet, he isn’t the one who checks on me every night, holds my hand when I cry. I’m being so unfair. My husband has a demanding job. He saves lives, puts his own life on the line, all in the name of protection. I gaze out our window in suburban, California. I love my house, the yard. Eric makes enough money so I don’t have to work, yet…I think I would like to. The charity work I do is important, but I need something more, something for me. He says since we’re planning to have a baby soon, there’s no sense in going to work now. He’s right. The baby would need me and I’d hate to leave our baby with a sitter.

My best friend, Ryan, says I should do whatever makes me happy. I’m not sure what that is.

I flopped down on the couch. I can’t ever sleep after Eric gets a call to leave in the middle of the night. Tonight, my angst is worse than usual. My skin crawls. I have an ache in my chest. What is my problem?

The doorbell rings, my cell chimes. Ryan’s name flashes on the screen.

I peek out the window beside the door. A police car is in my driveway. Nothing unusual, except Eric’s not here to greet them.

My breath catches. A piercing numb-feeling races through my veins.

My hand shakes as I put the phone to my ear and open the door. “Hello.” I say. Two uniformed policemen gaze at me, their faces solemn.

“Em,” Ryan says.

One word, nothing more, every sound, every person blurs. My heart plummets to my feet. “No-o-o!”

Excerpt:

Emma cleared her throat. “Well, if she’s your fiancée, then she has certain rights.”

He stared at her as if she’d grown two heads. “I’m not engaged to her.”

“Oh…uh, it takes time getting used to a broken engagement.” Her voice faded from the disappointment that he not only was engaged, but he lied to her.

Ryan closed the distance between them, spun her on the bar stool, and placed a hand on each side of her face. “I’m not engaged to her or anyone, never have been. I certainly wouldn’t be able to do this, if I were.” His words broke off as his lips found hers.

This time, the kiss didn’t catch her off guard. As freaked out as the situation made her, she responded and sucked on his lower lip. His tongue traced her lips and she parted for him to slip inside. He felt good, more than good. The man knew how to kiss.

About The Author

Author_Pic copy

As a child, I entertained myself for hours playing pretend, but not with dolls and such. I created stories and pictured them in my mind, sometimes even acted them out, my well preserved secret until now. I spent years after leaving school trying to figure out my niche. Not being a literary enthusiast, I never thought my childhood pastime would lead in this direction.

In life, one door closes and another opens, so I’m told. This was true for me. I lost my mother, my best friend, to cancer. After a year without her, I picked up her favorite hobby…reading. After one book, a romantic suspense, I was hooked. In the past, I’d fall asleep after a few minutes of reading. Now, books rank up there with a good red wine. It didn’t take long for my childhood muse to come back in adult version urging me to put the scenes in my head on paper.

I hope I have provided you with the escape similar to the ones I conjured in childhood and rediscovered as an adult, and I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I have loved creating them.

Cait lives in Virginia with her husband and three daughters.

Sarah J. Pepper's The Death of The Mad Hatter

book cover

If the king loses his head, then the Queen with a Bleeding Heart would rule the Red Court until Time ceased to move forward. When a second carried on for infinity, every creature in Wonderland would tip their Hat to the misfit girl with a Boy’s name (or was it a boy with a Girl’s name?) who’d end the Reign of Terror. However, it all hinged on the One-Eyed Hare being able to convince an uninspirable Heir that the impossible was indeed possible—like stopping time—and that Love was worth a Beheading.

Heads would Roll…

Hearts would Break…

In the end, would it matter who Reigned?

Excerpt:

There were the types of girls who dressed for guys, the type who still played dress-up, the type who lived in sweatpants, and then there was an entirely different breed who wore mismatched socks with pride. This chick fell into the last category. Why anyone could possibly think bright orange and blue would go together, unless they were a Boise State fan, was beyond my thought process. Her shoes were quite possibly handcrafted a hundred years ago, and her tattered skirt looked as though she found it in a dusty box tucked away in an attic. However, the zebra patterned gloves actually appeared to be from this decade.

“Well, it’s rather fortunate that you didn’t dribble. Mr. Ruth would have a fit if he became familiar with the underside of your pet-soaked shoe,” the girl said, petting the stuffed animal’s head. Her accent was none that I’d heard before—and I’d lived in a lot of different places. She sounded like a British gal impersonating a southern bell. “It’d be quite regrettable if anything happened to him on the first day of school. He must have fallen out of his hidey-hole.”

“You named your stuffed rabbit, Mr. Ruth?”

She covered the bunny’s ears. “Rutherford is his real name, but he hates it and makes all the other rumperbabbits call him by his nickname.”

“Rumperbabbits?”

“Bunnies, rabbits, hares—rumperbabbits. Same thing,” she said with a wink. She had the most volatile light-blue eyes that were so electrifying I couldn’t look away.

Time out—just for reference, I didn’t believe in juvenile notions, like love at first sight. In my book, time didn’t cease to move forward when two people fell in love. As a matter-of-fact, I’d have to be drunk (not on love) for such an irrational thought to enter my mind.

But, there was something magical about her. A mischievous charm. I wouldn’t have said that I necessarily liked it, but it was intriguing. She was intriguing… and new. For a town whose newspaper’s biggest story was the harvest report, having a new girl in school would most likely be headlined on The Gossiper’s front page.

35 HUMUNGOUS Reasons why you should stop whatever STRESSFUL thing you’re doing, find some deLIGHTful candies, a cuP OF teA, a comFY BLANkeT, and welcome the MADneSs that is the “Death of the Mad Hatter!” But don’t take my word for it, because I’m already quite mad *and biased* so take theirs! (obtained from Goodreads/Amazon reviews)

  1. You are totally missing out if you don’t TBR right now!!! One of the greatest books of 2013!
  2. With random wit and phrases I dare say Sarah J. Pepper’s young Alice is better than the original.
  3. Stop!!! This is not your mother Alice in Wonderland!!! I want you to close your eyes and remember the first time you read or hear the story about Alice, then forget it, because Alice Mae give crazy a whole new meaning.
  4. Alice in Wonderland had been done, and remade a few times and lastly being with Johnny Depp, but they cannot hold a candle to this story.
  5. Alice Mae and Ryley are a captivating couple, and their first kiss is mesmerizing.
  6. I was BLOWN AWAY. I had no freaking clue how the author would turn this into something that didn’t feel like a total copy-cat novel. It was flippin’ amazing!
  7.  I really liked the ending. Sarah J. Pepper has a wonderful sense of humor and (I can’t say it enough) a great imagination.
  8. It’s something to make up a new world entirely but to write your own version of an already internationally well-known fairy take is something else and an incredibly brave thing to do. I’m sure there is always this fear that you won’t pull it off but Sarah absolutely did.
  9. It is a fine tribute to Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”.
  10. I must admit that I was so completely drawn into this distinctive story that I needed to know if Alice Mae and/or Ryley would fulfill the prophecy.
  11. All the evil guys and gals were done perfectly, there was never a moment I didn’t love to hate them!
  12. I devoured this book in a single day because I couldn’t put it down.
  13. Sarah J Pepper will not let you down with this book. Its full of action, a believable romance & twists that will blow your mind.
  14. Everything from the wacky prophecies, to Alice Mae’s crazy make-up, I loved and couldn’t get enough of the superb and splendiferous weirdness!
  15. The vibrancy of which Pepper describes each and every detail brings to life the people and creatures of Wonderland so well that you want to meet each and every character.
  16. The uniqueness of Pepper’s tale comes from her integration of the power of candy (say it with me now, “Mmmm, candy…”), the snarky politics, an unwitting heir, and the mysterious-malicious-lying-liar-fated-lover girl with a boy’s name. And don’t even get me started on the delightful yet headache-inducing riddles (can you believe the little buggers waited to unravel themselves until the very end?!?!)! Pepper’s writing style was quirky and bizarre – and after gaining a tenuous grasp of the ever changing ebb and flow, I realized it was the perfect fit for this tale, and I loved it!
  17. This book is a book that I can keep reading over and over!!
  18. Prepare to stay alert and on the edge of your seat as you can’t wait to turn to the next page.
  19. If you’re a fan of the classic tale, be ready for something completely different, and completely wonderful! Sarah J. Pepper has really outdone herself with this one! Do yourself a favor, and get lost in Wonderland!
  20. That first page sucks you right in without letting you go. It’s just like falling down a rabbit hole, endless and inescapable.
  21. I think that Ryley and Alice Mae’s interactions were beautifully written. I loved that Ryley simultaneously wanted to strangle and kiss Alice Mae at the same time.
  22. I loved the ending of this novel because everything was resolved in the right way IMO.
  23. The story is fast-paced and a page turner and don’t worry there are major differences between this book and the classic one and you can’t even imagine who much more you’ll get from this story. So get ready for the huge surprise. Enjoy, folks!
  24.  I don’t think I have ever read a take on Wonderland that was quite so amusing, disturbing, confusing and wonderful all at the same time!
  25. This is a wildly imaginative book filled with rich quirky descriptions, strong characters and a believable romance line.
  26. The story is the part that really blew me away. Whatever you know about the original Wonderland put it aside because wow this is such an original take and such an amazing telling of this story. It was so WELL DONE!!
  27. This compelling, heart-racing yet romantic novel leaves you on edge until the very end, rooting for all the right characters and in awe of Sarah’s incredible imagination.
  28. I wanted to snarl at anyone who dared interrupt my reading.
  29. I can only say that the imagination of Sarah J. Pepper is a twisted, magical place. One I’m pretty sure I want would like to vacation in…maybe…
  30. From the beginning it draws you in and keeps you going!
  31. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this story, but what I got surpassed anything I could have imagined! There are many takes and twists of this age-old classic. One never knows what they will get into with any of them.
  32. I couldn’t put this book down. I was sucked into the vortex of this complex, yet simple story.
  33. Alice in Wonderland gets a makeover and I approve!
  34. The author masterfully tells this story in first person voice through both the eyes of Alice Mae Liddell and Ryley Edward Edgar. Along with the alternating points of view, Pepper creatively weaves flashbacks of previous visits to Wonderland further transporting you into this intoxicating story.
  35. It was one of the best Alice in Wonderland adaptations that I have read. I was witty, fun and just plain brilliant.

NEVER GIVE UP

 by JoAnne Myers

For as long as I can remember, I have had an artistic flare-whether that be for writing, painting, sewing or drawing. I recall as a child how much I enjoyed drawing. The writing came later. My seventh grade English teacher was Mrs. Henderson-a young mother and wife. She gave us a writing assignment and after gifting me with an A+ told me I should consider writing as a career. She meant as a journalist. I did not take her advise and become a journalist (one of my many misgivings). My mind went toward other things as many young girls dream of-a husband, home, and family of my own. I put my love for writing and painting on hold for years. I unfortunately married a man who like my mother never encouraged me to be artistic. It was not until my children were grown and I no longer had a husband, that I went back to my first love-art. I got a late start, but always encouraged my children and others to partake of artistic endeavors. I now have six books under contract with two publishing houses. So my words to you all, is that no matter what road you choose, never forget your passion, and always keep it close to heart. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you from enjoying your natural talents. You might need to put art on a temporary hold, but never ever give up.

5***** Review

The author recreates the scenes with dramatic fashion, adding characters that are so realistic; it feels like you’re living the moment right along with them. She is a wonderful storyteller, paying attention to every intricate detail and leaving you hanging onto every word. If you’re a fan of crime thrillers, this book will definately not disappoint!

BTS Magazine-December 2013 Issue 17- Reviewer Marie Haney

EXCERPT:

Undaunted and short on patience, the agent stared at the fat jerk sitting before him gleefully puffing on a cigar, most likely homegrown in Detroit, Michigan, not Cuba. “I attend the Kingdom Hall on occasion,” he said.
“Well most of us like Malloy. He’s helped rid this town of criminals. He was a volunteer firefighter, and his wife cooks for the annual policeman’s ball. Hell, Malloy even coached volleyball for the kids when he wuz younger. Now a person who does that ain’t all bad,” the chief declared.
Barstow’s sudden burst of energy to safeguard his fishy friend, picqued Harmon’s interest. What had Malloy done? He decided he wasn’t leaving until he had the full, sordid story.
“So you and Malloy are pals, and he did something he couldn’t get out of, and you tried to salvage his job, but the big shots said, ‘No!’ Is that how it went?” Harmon asked.
“Yeah, Malloy did somethin’ real stupid.”
“I’m listening,” Harmon replied.
“The rumors of Malloy allowin’ his friends and family members to snoop through the cornfield, and photograph the area after the victims were removed, was true. Everyone is curious about this crime. Nothin’ this big ever happened in this town before, and the pictures were for souvenirs, you know. Then after the limbs were removed, he brought in a back hoe, and tore up the whole damned crime scene, involving Thomas.” The chief growled in disgust.
“Yeah, that was stupid,” Harmon said. “So Malloy’s unethical conduct was the reason the disciplinary board was in session?”
“Yep, they made their decision this mornin’,” the chief said. “He’s out. There was nothin’ I could do for him.”
“You’d think a cop with over twenty years’ experience would demonstrate better reasoning then destroy evidence. Unless he’s covering his own tracks,” Harmon said realizing what he was implying. “Do you believe Malloy committed the murders?”
“Now, I didn’t say that. A lot of officers were on this case, so a lot of mistakes happened. We never dealt with this type crime before. Many might have made the same mistakes Malloy did.”
Dismissing the chief’s excuses for Malloy’s incompetence, Harmon demanded an answer. He was tired of being duped by the local cops and wanted the truth, and wanted it now. Standing and placing both palms on the chief’s shiny desk, the agent looked the chief square in his squinty brown eyes and said, “Cough it up, Chief! There’s more to it then that. If there were numerous mistakes made by officers other then Malloy, why was he the only one kicked off the force? Now spit it out! What the hell did Malloy do?”
“All right, all right!” the chief whined, “Malloy screwed the dead girl three weeks before she was killed–and got caught!”
The Agent was speechless. Walking to the window overlooking Main Street, he stared vacantly. Hadn’t one of our witnesses suggested something like that? But–with the crisp wind howling, the citizens dining in the local cafés, others window shopping for Christmas or starting their shift at the town’s businesses–this seems unreal. How can such a seemingly sweet country town be so full of bad apples, savage murders, police misconduct and corruption, evidence tampering? This town is certainly no Mayberry, thought Harmon.

Paranormal Cravings Battle of the Book

Excerpt:

“Your eyes are so lovely; please don’t hide them from me. Don’t be afraid. I would never hurt you.”

His sincerity must have been contagious because the words slipped through my lips without permission. “I know you’d never hurt me intentionally. It’s the unintentional consequences I fear.”

He brought his other hand up to cup my other cheek and, with my face firmly held he said, “Linden, I’m not fool enough to think that the gods don’t intentionally f**k with us.”

His use of that word was unexpected. Always a gentleman, but always something more carnal beneath the surface too. The inconsistency seemed natural.

“But if that ever happens, I will spend forever trying to atone. Don’t turn away from me.” He stared at me for a moment and when his face started to move toward mine, I thought for sure he would kiss my lips, but instead he placed a lingering kiss to my forehead and pulled me into a hug. If he felt anything for me other than friendship, that was his moment to prove it. I had my answer. I gave a forced smile and pulled away.

“Please, play,” he said while trailing his hand over my back.

Facing the piano, with my fingers lingering above the keys, I tried not to allow disappointment to lace my words. “How did you know about the song?” My racing heart slowed as I realized the kiss wouldn’t happen.

His response was casual. “I have very keen hearing and you start to hum it every time you walk away from me to return home. Where is the song from?”

Strange. Maybe I was louder than I thought.

“I don’t know where I learned it. I think I made it up, but it’s hard to know for sure.”

“It’s beautiful, please…” He motioned to the piano.

He stood and I pressed one key to test to see if it was in tune. Pitch-perfect, of course. I should have expected no less. I stretched to measure the distance to the pedals. After my assessment, I began to play. As I pressed the keys, I tried to forget he was even in the room, but that became impossible as he provided subtle hints as to how I should adjust my posture. He pushed back on my shoulders and lifted my elbows with a light touch. The adjustment made a difference, and in time my composition transitioned to something more graceful.

He placed his hands on my shoulders as he stood behind me and whispered, “Now relax, the music is in control. Give in to it. Let it take you, command you, while you find freedom in its control.”

His finger made small massaging circles on my neck and shoulders, and the more he touched me, the more at ease I became. I played better than I ever had.

He ran his hands up and down my forearms, coaxing the notes from my fingers as he whispered in my ear, “That’s it. You are much more relaxed. Music is energy, Linden. With energy, you must first make yourself an attractive conduit. Energy does not like resistance. The less resistant you are, the more it can take hold, become stronger—make you stronger. Allow it to embody you, become one with you, and embrace its possession.” His breath teased as his words sent waves of electricity through me.

I added improvisational parts to the song I had never imagined. I played sequences far beyond my skill level without effort. As I neared the end of the song, the magical feeling broke down, and with it went my newfound ability. It was as if I took a drug to make me a better musician and it had begun to wear off, but I knew it wasn’t a drug. It was Cyril.

As the last notes breathed their final whisper to the air, I heard him say, “Well done! I bet you even surprised yourself.”

“How did you do that?”

“I didn’t do anything. I simply taught you to sit up and concentrate. Other than that, it was all you. Music can’t possess the unwilling.”

I shot him a suspicious glare. “All right…your turn.” I went to get up.

“No, please stay. Let me see…I’ll play something you know. How about Beethoven’s Sonata quasi una fantasia? You may know it as the Moonlight Sonata.”

I nodded. He could have played Chopsticks and I would have been happy.

He began with the solemn phrasing of the piece. Every languid note held so much emotion. My fingers mindlessly stroked the side of his leg in the slow melodic tempo of the first movement. The mournful timbre accented the sadness I felt knowing that every minute I stayed with him, it was going to be much harder to accept I could never have him.

I had only heard the first movement of the piece but as the somber melody transitioned into a more energetic strain, I knew it would be an experience I would never forget.

His enthusiastic gestures, the bounce of his hair as he pounded out the rapid notes, all added to the look of determination on his face. The notes were saturated in passion, and violence defined him. I watched him with intense concentration and wondered if he brought that same passion to his kisses, his bed, and his love. It would be a miracle if one person could harness him.

When he played the last note, his breathing was heavy and a thin film of perspiration coated the skin of his brow and neck. He looked down at the floor and then slowly into my eyes. That instant, the connection formed again. He reached up and brushed the hair from my face and I did the same to him, draping his thick, dark, sweat-moistened locks behind his ear.

“That was magnificent. I’ve never…”

His hand reached up to cup my face. His thumb caressed my lower lip as I spoke.

“Heard…or seen…anything like you. I mean that.”

He smiled and continued to outline my lip.

“Linden…” he said with a breathy whisper, “there are so many things I want to show you, teach you. I want you to make me a promise.”

I answered without hesitation. “Yes.”

“The way you are looking at me right now… Please, always look at me this way. Stare into my eyes and see me for who I am and know that there is nothing more than this. When the world calls things into question, you need not question me because I will always be here for you. The comfort I find in your eyes is new and frightening.”

I found it difficult to believe anything frightened this man. He cupped my cheek and with tenderness that mirrored his words, he caressed my face and trailed his hand to rest on my chest just below my neck. I wrapped my hand around his wrist, holding him to me.

He leaned in, pinning our arms between us, and breathed, “Promise me.”

I closed my eyes, reveling in his closeness, his scent, his heat. “OK.”

“Good.”

He inhaled. “I will make you a promise in return. I cannot bring you into my world as I would like, so I will not ask you to indulge me further. I should let you go, but I’m sorry, I am far too selfish to break all ties. I do promise to always be your friend, your mentor.”

Deep down, hopeful he might love me and see me as a woman, I opened my eyes and managed a smile filled with sadness and disappointment.

Protégé was the title bestowed upon me, not girlfriend, lover, or wife. I looked away from him to try to pull back the tears that escaped my eyes.

“Already breaking your promise?”

I looked up and he brushed my tears away with his thumb.

“I’m not immune, Linden. I feel it too. I just need to be stronger than this, for you.” He pulled me into his embrace.

His arms were tight around me. He smiled but something sad lingered behind it. “It’s getting late. I should get you home.”

“Who is she?”

This was not a question I expected. Even though I was comfortable being nude, most humans were not. I saw in her mind what horrors men had bestowed upon her. The massive erection I sported should have frightened her, but with each quick glance I made in her direction, I saw she stood firm and resolute, while twirling the blindfold between her fingers.

“Who?” Not the time to speak riddles.

“The woman for whom that kiss was intended.”

“Oh.” I brushed my hands through my hair. The long, black strands fell one by one back into place. I sighed. “She’s my love. My light. But she is out of reach.”

“I have a confession.”

Chapter 1

His blood seeped through her fingers. Alex pressed her shaky hands to the wound on Sam’s stomach, but the blood wouldn’t stop. “Please stop. God, please make it stop,” she begged.

She didn’t know what had happened or exactly how long he’d been there. Everything was fine when she’d stepped into the shower minutes earlier, but when she wrapped the oversize towel around her the house was unusually quiet.

As she dressed, she yelled for Sam. He didn’t answer. She checked every room. No sign of him. A rush of damp cool air swept by her as she entered the bedroom for a second pass. She glanced at the patio door. It was ajar. Beyond the door, Sam lay in a curled heap in their backyard. She ran to him. His left hand clutched his abdomen, and his right gripped around the handle of his 9mm police issued Glock.

Blood poured from his wound, coated his hand, and ran down his arm. His hand loosened and drifted to the ground. Instinctively Alex pressed her hand to his wound. It didn’t curb the bleeding. Her hand was now coated as well.

Sam shifted his gaze to Alex. “Call 911, I’ve been stabbed,” his voice not much more than a whisper.

Excerpt

It had taken a few turnings across several streets before Selina was convinced that she and James were being followed.

She looked up at him, brows slightly furrowed. As she was drawing breath to express her observation, James without warning pulled her around a corner and into a small alley and then engulfed her in his arms.

Her mouth opened again, this time with another question on her lips. He shook his head and gently placed one finger to her lips to ask for silence while they waited for their pursuer.

The smell of him was an intoxicating mix of leather, musk and pine. She pressed herself to him as if driven by instinct. James shielded her view of the street and she realised his dark cloak largely hid her and her lavender sprigged muslin gown from passersby.

Within moments, the sound of not one but two pairs of running feet rounded the corner.

“Go down there,” the first voice commanded. “They must be only just out of sight.”

The sound of the second pair of feet faded into the late afternoon.

Still shielded by James, Selina could hear the owner of the first set of feet slow to a walk and head further down the street, before stopping, turning back towards them.

James pushed Selina away and in a swift, sure motion, he stepped out of the alley and grabbed the arm of their shadow. The man swung and landed a lucky strike on James’ cheek.

James reeled from the blow but kept his feet and used the momentum to deftly firm his grasp on the assailant’s arm, twist it behind his back and to shove the man bodily against the opposite red brick wall of the alley.

“Who do you work for?” James demanded.

The man, unremarkably dressed, was a lean, tallish individual with narrow set eyes and a thin, almost emaciated face. He did not respond, only grunting in discomfort. James shoved the man’s arm further up his back.

“Reynold is telling you leave matters alone, Penventen,” he finally gasped.

“And yet he’s too much of a coward to deliver his own message – tell him that from me.”

The man smirked and cast a glance at Selina who stood a few yards away but watching with alarm.

“Pretty girl you’ve got there,” he grunted as James tightened his grip causing the man pain.

James leaned in menacingly. “If Miss Rosewall and her family are harassed in any way there will be no place on earth that you will be safe from me.”

He pulled the man away from the wall and shoved him towards the cross street where the rat-faced man half walked and half staggered over the cobbles to where his companion waited on the corner. He was about the same build as his friend but his features were obscured by a tricorn hat and high collared jacket.

With one long last look at James and Selina, the two disappeared around the next building.

Satisfied that they had gone, James dabbed the back of his hand at his cheek where a small cut had opened from the initial punch. He glanced at Selina who, instead of cowering in fright as he had expected, appeared to be furious.

And she appeared to be furious at him.

“You let that man go! Why James?”

“He didn’t do anything wrong.”

“He hit you!”

James merely shrugged in response. Selina gave a long-suffering sigh as she opened her drawstring purse, withdrawing a handkerchief and wetting it with a small amount of her perfume before handing the linen to him.

He accepted the kerchief with its scent of bergamot and lavender and winced as he put it to his left cheek.

“The alcohol in it will help clean the cut,” she explained, annoyance still plain in her voice.

“He was just an opportunistic bag snatcher,” James offered.

“If you insist,” Selina shrugged.

She raised an eyebrow waiting for James to account for himself.

James sighed, knowing that Selina would not accept anything else but the truth. The problem was he didn’t know the truth for himself although he was going to get to the bottom of this tonight.

“What if I tell you that it’s the best explanation I have for now?”

“Then I suppose that is satisfactory… for now.”

A few words of wisdom from Nancy…

What inspired you to write your current novel?

Visiting National Parks became a recent passion. My husband and I had just returned from the Grand Canyon. A PBS series about National Parks was going to air and we decided to watch. My mind drifted to another place. I began thinking about the recent park visit, the history I just watched and how fun it might be to have a young girl move between the past and present. I had no intention of writing a novel. So it literally happened overnight.

Is your novel part of a series? Can you tell me a little about the world you’ve created?

Yes, it is. The first book is Waiting for Dusk, followed by Call of the Canyon. Stealing Time was just recently released.

Katie lives in a small town in present day Ohio. Her dream world is something quite different. She travels back in time to the Grand Canyon in 1927. She works as a Harvey Girl at El Tovar Restaurant at the canyon. Because she’s been there on vacation, she has difficulty separating what’s real and what isn’t after she wakes up. She’s determined to figure things out after spotting her father at the canyon as a young man and realizing there’s more to it than just a dream.

What do you think the reader will enjoy the most about your novel?

If they read all three novels, I think they will discover more and more about time travel and how it works in this particular series. They may like that a book helps a person travel through time, not a machine. The Grand Canyon in 1927 is the only place in the past where the book takes people. From there, they must travel to other places just like anyone else. Since the travelers from the present visit the same place year after year, history could change. It’s hard to be an observer and not a participant.

What was the hardest part of writing this novel?

I find writing descriptions of scenery, clothing and people’s appearance are the hardest. Searching for the right words without going into endless details is difficult. What I see in my mind and then try to put on paper isn’t the easiest thing for me to do. Then I tell myself, the reader has just enough information to picture the scene as they want. It’s a balancing act.

What is your favorite quote?

I have more than one. I will share my top three.

A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

― Dr. SeussHorton Hears a Who!

“Doctor Who: You want weapons? We’re in a library. Books are the best weapon in the world. This room’s the greatest arsenal we could have. Arm yourself!

(from Tooth and Claw in Season 2)”
― Russell T. Davies

“If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember that this whole thing was started with a dream and a mouse.”

― Walt Disney Company

If you had a time machine, what time period would you travel to?

Love this question! No doubt about it, I would have to go to the Grand Canyon in 1927 and see how I did. I would eat at El Tovar and have a Harvey Girl wait on me. I’d try to peek in the back kitchen to see what’s going on. I’d run to Kolb Studio to see the real Emery and Ellsworth Kolb and hope I’d get a glimpse of Drew! I’d visit all the places and trails mentioned in the book and compare them to how they look today. Hopefully not too much of the Grand Canyon has changed.

Where it all began

Book 1

waiting for dusk

Read a book.

Fall asleep.

Meet a boy.

Is it real or just a dream?

Katie’s everyday life suddenly turns exciting when she travels back in time and meets the boy of her dreams. Thinking of nothing else, willing to leave the real world behind, she’s determined to find out if it’s all a dream or not. Returning again and again, Katie almost has her answers until one day her precious book goes missing.

Amazon

Excerpt:

Katie glanced over at the hotel, and leaning against the wall in the shadows was a boy about her age. She got up and walked toward him. She’d show him. Who was he to laugh at her? Look at all the eggs in this basket. She didn’t break one during her getaway.

The closer she got to him, the more clearly she saw him. He wasn’t a boy but almost a man. The cliché “tall, dark and handsome” fit him. His dark brown, wavy hair was long on the top, and shorter on the sides. A strand of hair fell into his eyes. His eyes sparkled and locked onto hers. Her legs felt like mush, and she stumbled. He reached out and caught her.

“Are you okay?” His voice was kind, concerned.

Katie tried to gain her composure. “Yes, yes. Are you one of the vacationers? Because if you are, I shouldn’t be talking to you. It’s against the rules.” Rules? What am I thinking? It’s my dream after all.

“No. No I’m not. I work here at the park doing an internship. My name is Andrew, by the way. Andrew Martin.”

“I’m Kathryn, but everyone calls me Katie.”

Andrew’s brows crossed. “Katie doesn’t seem to suit you. I think I shall call you Kate.”

Katie thought Andrew was a little full of himself, deciding a new name for her.

“Then I shall call you Drew.” She shot back.

“Drew, it is then!”

Kate found him charming. He had a strong laugh and a beautiful smile. It was hard not to stare at him—something she was good at, according to her mother. She felt she would never get tired of staring at him. She wanted to reach out and brush back the piece of hair that fell over his forehead.

Katie blinked and brought herself back to earth. “I need to get these eggs into the kitchen.”

“By all means, don’t let me hold you up. It was very nice to meet you, Kathryn, Kate.”

“And you, too, Andrew…Drew.” Katie started for the door.

“Kate. Are you staying at the boarding house by chance?”

“Yes. Yes, I am.” She blushed and went inside.

Book 2

call of the canyon

Two Lives…

Two Worlds…

Heartbreak awaits.

Call of the Canyon, second of the Waiting for Dusk series, continues the dramatic story of Kate Roberts and Drew Kelly. New challenges face the couple when Drew joins Kate in the present. Nothing is easy. Tyson’s still their nemesis, causing trouble whenever he can. Carl, Kate’s friend and neighbor, moves back home to Ohio and creates unexpected problems at the canyon. A wedding, a tragic accident, and a family broken by scandal affect both the past and present. And in the end, Kate may pay the ultimate price.

Review by Aubrey Wynne

Bait Shop Blues is a classic story of city girl meets country boy. The couple are brought together under strange circumstances. Cassie’s estranged grandfather has left her half of his bait shop. She arrives in Minnesota to find Leif, the heir to the other half of the business. Leif had a disturbing childhood and was taken from his reservation as a young boy and fostered by Cassie’s grandfather. He had no idea Cassie existed until a few days before he meets her and is not excited about having a partner.

Cassie, used to the hectic city life of Chicago and running her own cosmetic business, struggles in the rural atmosphere of Minnesota. Camping and fishing may not be her thing, but she eventually realizes Leif may be worth the inconveniences. They both have baggage, and with such diverse interests, struggle to find common ground. But as Cassie sorts out her past family relationship and her growing feelings about Leif, the sparks fly. The attraction between them builds even though Cassie has sworn off sex.

The author does an outstanding job of developing the relationship between these two characters. I fell in lust with the sexy Leif. I found the rugged, outdoorsman a perfect compliment to the urban Cassie. The story is filled humor, tenderness and romance. While the scenes are not  sexually graphic, you easily feel the passion and heat that simmers between the couple. Bait Shop Blues is a wonderful love story with a Happy Ever After. I give it a hearty four mugs.

 Excerpt:

“You know, I was surprised to hear Roy had a granddaughter. He’d told me often during the past fifteen years he had no family.” He raised his brow. “Makes me wonder why you suddenly appeared out of nowhere.”

Cassandra frowned. “The private investigator he’d hired had learned about the car accident that had taken my parents’ lives. After that he managed to track me down. Didn’t Grandpa tell you he’d been searching for us?”

“Yeah, he did.” He gave a short irritable laugh. “About two days before he died.”

“Oh! I’m sorry. You must have been surprised,” she murmured. She tried to imagine how she’d feel if someone had butted into her business, Pretty Woman Cosmetics. She’d be furious.

“Not just surprised, but stunned. Roy then told me he’d had a falling out with his only son years ago.”

“Unfortunately, that’s true. I was three years old at the time.”

“Roy was real torn up when he heard about your father’s death.”

She sighed. “I imagine he was, seeing as my grandfather and father hadn’t spoken to each other in years. He said it was the saddest day of his life, and he’d forever regret they hadn’t mended their fences. I wish I’d had the opportunity to see Grandfather before he passed away. I was so young when my parents took me away from here that I’ve no memories of him.”

As she peered out the window, the beauty of the vivid green treetops caught her interest, but then she shuddered at the grayish-colored water. After awhile she sank back in her seat and grimaced, identifying the pungent odors in the plane. Leather, gasoline and the distinct odor of fish blended together, yet each scent was distinct.

She was uncomfortably conscious of his maleness. Virile and confident, but without being macho and overbearing would aptly describe him—the little she knew of him. Yet, her awareness of him as a very attractive man was starting to bother her. He was just another handsome man. She’d dated plenty of good-looking guys and had learned her lesson well. She bit her lip thoughtfully, gauging her attraction to him and decided, in the end, she must be experiencing some sort of chemical imbalance.
