Spotlight 1: Valentine Pets & Kisses Giveaway

The Final Countdown- VPK Exposed (4) copy.png
Valentino, Be Mine by Tina D.C. Hayes
Kaylee Rose is thrilled when a neighbor moving out of the country asks if she’ll consider taking in her teacup Yorkie,Valentino, but there are a few strings attached. When she finds out a man she can’t stand is the other caretaker, she’s forced to deal with the arrogant jerk until they decide who gets the pampered pooch permanently . . . or risk losing the dog to a heartbreaking fate.

Excerpt

Kaylee hoped punctuality weighed somewhere in their evaluation, because whoever Carter was, he or she was fifteen minutes late the last time Kaylee checked her watch. Not that she minded. It was a little intimidating to meet the other potential owner. What if Valentino liked Carter better?
As if he sensed her worry, the Yorkie wiggled around in her arms and licked her cheek again. She draped him over her shoulder, a position she knew from experience that he enjoyed, and nuzzled her cheek against him.
Something behind Kaylee caught Ruthie’s attention. A silly grin twisted her mouth as she threw her hand up in an exaggerated wave. Unless this Carter person was a complete moron, they were pretty hard to miss, since they were the only people in that part of the park.
“Carter, over here!” Ruthie stood and flapped her arms even more.
OMG. Either Pam’s personal assistant had finally lost it after years of dealing with her perfectionist boss or there must be a celebrity walking up behind them. Kaylee was afraid to look. She racked her brain for any movie stars named Carter but couldn’t come up with a single one. From the blush on the other woman’s face, she was pretty sure Carter was a man, and if not a famous one, he must be drop dead gorgeous.
Valentino’s tail wagged in Kaylee’s face as he barked his hello and squirmed against her shoulder. A masculine laugh sounded before Carter greeted them. “Good morning, Ruthie.”
Kaylee ran her hand through her hair and pushed a section of bobbed blonde locks behind her ear before she turned around to meet him.
Sunglasses hid his eyes, but she could definitely understand why the PA was acting like a teenage girl backstage at a One Direction concert. Carter was smoking hot.
“Hey, dog, you glad to see me, boy?” His voice was even handsome, in a whiskey smooth kind of way. “May I?”
“Sure,” Kaylee answered, and let him hold the pooch that was squirming to get to him.
Then Carter took off his shades.
“You!”
It couldn’t be, and she hoped to high heaven it wasn’t who she thought. But it was. When he smirked at her, it erased any lingering doubt.

Callie James is such a big Noah Patrick fan, she named her energetic Chihuahua after the man of her dreams. When they find themselves hiding out in the same Brooklyn Brownstone, a crazy blizzard, a never-ending supply of spaghetti, and a dog with identity issues bring them together even though they both have secrets that would tear them apart.
Excerpt

The knock on my door startled me.
I slowly opened the door and stared straight ahead … into the broad chest of a man. He wore baggy jeans and a blue t-shirt stretched across his pecs. He had removed his hoodie on his way to my place.
My gaze took a journey, not up but down. My brain on automatic spied his black leather high tops, his baggy, faded blue jeans, and the way his t-shirt gathered at his hips. His tan biceps flexed in the opening of his short sleeve shirt.
I stalled not wanting to confirm what I already knew. Every fiber of my being fired off signals on high alert for being so close to the man of my dreams.
Callie, this is getting awkward. Look at him.
I pushed my shoulders back, raised my head, blinked once, and gazed in his eyes.
Hi, gorgeous, coffee-colored eyes.
Noah Patrick.
I screamed and jumped up and down like a little girl. Thankfully, I kept my outburst on the inside. On the outside, I maintained a pillar of indifference.
“Hi.”
“Hey,” he said as his eyes narrowed.
I shifted from one foot to the other and leaned on the doorframe studying his face. I should have seen it the moment I laid eyes on him.
The bags under his eyes weren’t as pronounced as before. The cold must have had something to do with that. His kind eyes were more pronounced under the light in the hallway. A little color had returned to his face, and I could see he’d recently had his hair cut by the way it stood up on end.
He was Noah—my Noah—and he was beautiful.

Ivy Lane cover Large copy

Eloise Kolby steps off the bus and greets 1950’s Hollywood with high expectations and a smile. After two years of rejection and no big break, her boyfriend’s big surprise is a new project, on location in Italy—not a proposal. He convinces her to investigate a house he recently inherited in a small desert town and promises to send word about their future.

Postman Victor Burnham has waited to buy the property on Ivy Lane for over five years. From the moment the beautiful, mysterious woman from LA moves into “his house”, he can’t stop thinking about her. Their daily rendezvous at the mailbox have tongues wagging and Victor longing for not only his dream house but someone to share it with.

But when Eloise’s long-awaited letter arrives, it may stamp his heart with “Return to Sender.”

Excerpt:

Four hours later, she bent over her knees, panting like she just ran across the entire MGM studio. She hoped that man really did have her heart because the one in her chest felt like it would explode.

“A bit out of shape, eh?”

She looked up to see Rita Hayworth’s twin grinning down at her. The burnished, copper hair and teasing, blue eyes did not help her mood. How could someone look like that after an afternoon of such torture?

“It’s my first time out on a dance set. I’ll be fine.” With forced energy, she pushed off her knees and straightened to her full height. “But tell me we are done for today.”

With a husky laugh, she agreed. “Yes, ma’am. Officially off duty!”

Who’s hungry?” called a voice from the group of girls. A jumbled chorus of “me” and “I am” echoed over the now quiet set. Eloise searched the lot for Ross.

If you’re waiting for Wilson, don’t. He’s as popular as soda at a fountain and everyone wants a drink of him.” The redhead put an arm around her shoulder and gave a squeeze. “C’mon out with us, honey. My treat. You look like you need a good meal without owing some Romeo for it.”

“But Ross said he’d pick me up—”

“I bet he did. Do you believe everything people tell you?” She put a hand on her hip and took a pose like her mother used to when she’d done something foolish. “This is the movie business, sweetie. Don’t go flipping your wig over every sweet-talking man you meet. They’re like ants at a picnic.”

A Little Halloween History…

Our word Halloween is derived from the old words All Hallows Even (All Hallows Evening) because it was the eve of All Hallows Day (I November). Hallow is an old word for saint and today we call 1 November All Saints Day.

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain; from the Old Irish samain). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes regarded as the “Celtic New Year”. Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.

In pagan times, October 31 was New Year’s Eve, a night of evil and terror when all hell broke lose. Goblins and ghosts were abroad that night, while witches celebrated their black rites as the spirits and souls of the dead roamed the earth. To frighten the evil spirits and to bolster their own sagging spirits, our ancestors created a din with bells, horns, pots and pans, (just as we still do at midnight on December 31st), and built fires to frighten the witches or perhaps burn them if they might get caught. On the afternoon of October 31st, village boys would go from house to house collecting fuel for the midnight fires. Everyone was expected to contribute some peat or “coal pieces” to help burn the witches. Those who did not received dire warnings of the evil consequences that might follow.

In the 4th century the Church began to celebrate a feast to all the martyrs. At first it was celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost (in late May or early June). The Eastern Orthodox Churches still celebrate it on that day. However in the West in 609 or 610 Pope Boniface IV moved the feast of all martyrs to 13 May. Then in the 8th century Pope Gregory III (731-741) made 1 November a feast to remember all saints and it became known as All Saints Day or All Hallows Day.

After the 16th Century Reformation All Saints Day and Halloween were virtually forgotten in most of England, along with most other saints days. However Halloween continued to be observed in Scotland and Ireland. There was a belief that ghosts and witches were particularly active on that day.

About Us

Who are the Sexy Scribblers?
The Sexy Scribblers are 14 romance authors who have come together to compile short stories and take you on an adventure. Step inside and meet them.

How does it work?
We have only three rules:

1. The first author writes the first episode (approx 500 words) of any kind of story they want and the next author takes the story wherever they want to go. The last author ends the story however they see fit…or maybe it continues for another round. No brainstorming, outlining, or discussion of plot ahead of time. We write by the seat of our pants.

2. No changes can be made once an episode is written other than basic grammar corrections.

3. No censorship of language or sexual content. You have been warned!

SO without further ado, may I present the first story by the Sexy Scribblers. The six authors had such fun with this one, it will be continued in August. Enjoy! And Visit us on Facebook!

Scandalous

Episode 1 by Chanta Rand

Website: http://www.chantarand.com/

He smelled bacon.

He mentally struggled with whether to get up and eat or to lay comatose.

Comatose felt good.

Eating would mean dealing with his cotton-dry mouth and the insistent pounding at his hotel door.

He rolled over in his king-sized bed and cracked an eye open. His gaze landed on a plate stacked with strips of bacon, and a mountain of scrambled eggs slathered in Tabasco sauce—just the way he liked them.

He’d eaten the same breakfast ever since he’d bought this hotel years ago. Everything was as it should be, except for the idiot at his door. Who had the balls to disturb him after a night of…hell, what had he been doing last night?

His mind barreled through his memory bank until he remembered. Oh yeah, he’d gotten shitfaced with his cousin, Willard and his brother, Bubba. He could hold his liquor better than the average man, but last night he had a good reason for getting tanked.

Grumbling, he tossed his sheets aside and slid out of the bed stark naked. He yanked on a pair of jeans he found discarded on the carpet in the bedroom of his suite. He hobbled barefoot to the front room, but he pulled up short when he saw a buxom blonde sit up on the couch and wipe the sleep from her eyes. The words, Big Tits Ain’t a Crime stretched across the front of her tight t-shirt.

Incredulous, he rasped, “What the hell are you doing here, Anita?”

She yawned. “Hope you don’t mind, Reed. I crashed on your couch. But don’t worry. You and me didn’t do nuthin’. You was too drunk.”

Thank God! Sex was so much better when he had the memories to rewind.

“I don’t have to be at work for a few hours,” she added, a flicker of hope dancing across her cherub face. “I got time for a quickie.”

Anita was a maid at his hotel. In addition to her irritating habit of using her key to get into his room, she was also engaged to Willard. Reed enjoyed a good fuck, but not at the expense of someone’s fiancé.

“Some other time,” he lied as he walked with a slight limp toward the door. The hangover was temporary. The limp wasn’t. Most everybody in town knew how he’d sustained his injury. Women thought the cane he used was sexy. There was no accounting for female reasoning. His family had run this town for three generations. Power was one hell of an aphrodisiac.

He hoped Willard wasn’t on the other side of that door with a a pair of steel knuckles. Of course, it could be the police, too. He’d been known to raise hell during a night of drinking. But, he didn’t take the cops seriously. He’d gone to middle school with half of ‘em and played varsity football with the other half.

When he opened the door, he stared into the face of a strange woman. She was graced with high cheekbones, a mane of raven hair, and a long, slender neck he would love to sink his teeth into. Her stunning sable skin was marred only by the tight scowl she gave him. It was obvious she had a bone to pick. Adam had already sacrificed a rib for men everywhere. Reed would be damned if he let this beauty take one of his.

Episode 2 by Valerie Twombly

Website: http://www.valerietwombly.com/

Abby hadn’t been prepared when the door swung open, and Reed Evans greeted her wearing a pair of faded blue jeans and thick black hair that looked as though he’d been ridden hard. She stared into his blazing green eyes and would have melted if not for the fact he looked madder than a bull who’d just lost his nuts.

“Mr. Evans?” What a stupid question. Of course he was, but she’d suddenly lost her nerve.

“Who wants to know?” he growled.

“My name’s Abby Livingston and I’m here on business. May I come in?”

“Woman, you do realize what time it is?” At least he stepped aside, which was a positive sign.

“I am sorry.” She walked through the door, and it was then she spotted a blonde wearing a tee that was three sizes too small. Most likely the woman––if you could call her that––was the reason he looked so rough. Abby pulled back her shoulders and glided across the carpet with the grace and manners her southern granny would be proud of. She heard the click of the door behind her and when she turned, the girl was gone. No doubt, scooted out and sent on her way with a wad of cash in hand.

Time to get to the point. “Mr. Evans. I find myself in need of a bodyguard, and I was told you’re the best.”

He tipped his head back and laughed. “Oh shit.” Rubbing his temples he glared at her and grabbed a shirt from the back of a chair and shoved his arms through the sleeves. It was a shame to cover up such male perfection, but better for their conversation.

“You should have also been told that I haven’t been in the business since…”

“Yes. Since you took a bullet to the leg. I know.” She shifted her weight. Why the hell had she decided it would be a great idea to wear heels? Sneakers and jeans were more her style, but she’d thought a short skirt and pumps would go further at showcasing her long legs than pants. She’d taken great care with her appearance before she came. After all, if Reed Evans knew she grew up on the poor side of town he’d never agree to help her.

He poured himself a cup of coffee from the carafe on the table and took a long sip. “So you know then that this is a waste of your time?”

“I was also told you never turn down a damsel in distress.” She adjusted the strap of her purse. The one that carried her life savings and she hoped would be enough for at least a down payment on his services. After that, well…she’d figure it out.

“Well darlin’, that’s where you’re wrong.”

Episode 3 by Mina Khan

Website: http://minakhan.blogspot.com/

Good thing Abby had plenty of experience with challenges. She didn’t like them necessarily, but she never backed off from one. Squaring her shoulders, she met his glare and smiled. “We’ll see about that.”

A glint of interest sparked in his eyes as his lips twitched into a shadow of a smile. A smile that did nothing to cut the dark broodiness of his features or the thick tension in the room. Just made him look more…big, bad, and dangerous. She swallowed as her heart sprinted. Were those fangs peeking out over his full sensuous lips? Oh, yes. Good, so he really was a vampire.

“Not that you don’t have a smokin’ hot bod, but why does it need guarding?”

Heat rushed across her skin at his blunt words and roaming gaze, but she kept her chin up. “Perhaps I should have introduced myself by my professional name, Sitara the Seer at your service.”

He guffawed at that. “You don’t look much like your pictures.”

Yeah, well. Uncle Dave, her manager, guardian, and only living relative, insisted on stage presence. He thought exotic and mysterious sold better so the fancy name, the heavy makeup, the gaudy jewelry, and dressing in silk, and gauze outfits straight out of somebody’s harem fantasy. Everything about Sitara the Seer was a sham except for the ability to see the future.

Still smirking, Reed crossed beefy arms across his impressive chest. “So tell me what am I going to do next?”

“You’re going to offer me coffee and a seat.”

“Because that’s what the Universe is showing you?”

“No,” she said. “Because that’s the polite thing to do.”

“I like you.” He grinned and waved at a pair of straight back chairs sitting in front of his desk. “Make yourself comfortable. How do you take your coffee?”

“Black,” Abby said, lowering herself into a seat. Her skirt slid up as she crossed her legs. His eyes widened and followed every move. A very female sense of satisfaction filled her and she turned away to hide her smile.

Within moments, he’d placed her coffee by her and claimed the big leather chair on the other side of the desk. He leaned forward, hands clasped. “So what’s the story?”

She sipped her drink, letting the bitter taste, and rich, smoky aroma fortify her. “I have a regular client, let’s call him Mr. X.”

Reed raised a raven brow. “Mr. X?”

Abby flashed him a pointed look and continued. “He usually wants me to pick lottery numbers or race horses, favorable dates for business and such things. I knew he was involved in some shady deals, but this time…” She choked up on the rest of words and had to take another swallow of coffee.

“This time?” Reed picked up a pen and tapped on the desk top like a demented woodpecker.

She swallowed and met his cool green gaze. “He asked me if he should go into a new international venture. This time, I saw death. Not his, but that of other people at his hands.”

Reed made the time out sign. “Wait, you expect me to believe you actually saw a vision.”

“Yes, and because of that vision I’m now in danger.” Was that breathy voice coming from her? She cleared her throat.

“You told Mr. X you saw him murdering people?”

“Of course not.” She bit her lip. “I may have shouted out “Murderer!”

Episode 4 by Angie Daniels

Website: http://angiedaniels.com/

Reed was usually all about business, but once Abby started gnawing on her bottom lip, he’d barely heard another word she’d said. They were full, lush, and parted slightly, revealing the tip of her tongue as she drew the flesh between her teeth.

She had no idea the things he yearned to do with that delectable mouth.

And then, there was her feminine scent that was driving him fucking nuts. The fragrance was amber and lemongrass with the faintest hint of blood. She’d recently cut her leg—probably shaving—sending his appetite burning.

Damn, he’d love to kiss her wound and make it all better.

Hunger roared through him as his eyes perused a slender frame with enough tantalizing curves to make a man want to drop to his knees and give thanks… among other things.

Watching her, smelling her, Reed felt a rage of heat rushing through his veins that landed right smack at his groin, causing his cock to throb something fierce.

While she explained her dilemma, he found himself imagining how wild and wicked Abby could behave once she lost that restraint. She seemed to be the type of woman who possessed fire and will, and he wanted to know what turned her on. Already, he anticipated hours and hours of wicked pleasure.

Oh, he could hardly wait.

“Have you heard a word I said?” Abby barked, bringing him back into the conversation.

Reed slowly rose from the chair and frowned. “No, I’m afraid I have not,” he began, and when her eyes flashed dark fire, a smile curled his lips. “However, once we’ve discussed price, and you agree to my terms, then I’m all ears.”

Abby tilted her head to one side and sent curls bouncing around her face as she threw him an arched look. “Money is not an issue.”

Before he could respond, she slid the leather strap off her shoulder, unzipped the purse, and emptied the entire contents onto the cluttered wooden desk with a loud thump. Eyes wide, Reed stared down at the large bundles of cash. There had to be several thousand dollars right before his eyes, and yet the money was nowhere near as tempting as the woman sitting across from him.

“I think that should be more than enough,” she decided, her brown eyes glittering confidently.

“Really?” he murmured. As he gazed at her, Abby then made the mistake of nervously nibbling on her bottom lip again, only this time her teeth sank into the tender pink flesh, drawing just the slightest drop of blood. However, for a vampire it was more than enough to cause his lips to curl back and his fangs to show as he snorted a laugh.

“No, I’m afraid that won’t work,” Ó he began as he rounded the desk, taking one step and then another. “I want something else.”

“Something else?” Abby repeated, and then Reed heard the sharp intake of air as it hissed through her teeth. It was clear she knew which direction the conversation was headed.

“Well, what are you waiting for? Tell me what you want,” she demanded breathlessly.

Episode 5 by Luanna Stewart

Website: http://www.luannastewart.com/

Abby watched Reed’s eyes darken, and at the same time heard the door lock click into place.

Holy shit, batman. She’d heard stories about vampires being able to control stuff with thoughts, but she’d never witnessed it. The other vampires she’d met over the years had been too eager to stay under the radar, keep their secret powers secret.

“Um…what do you think you’re doing?” She had a pretty good idea, but there was no way in hell she was going to be this guy’s breakfast. Even if he was drop dead gorgeous. Damn, poor choice of words.

“Oh, I think you know exactly what I have in mind.” He crossed to a wall cabinet and took out a metal tray holding medical equipment. “But first we need to take care of preliminary screening.” He snapped on a pair of blue surgical gloves.

She tried to laugh. This wasn’t really happening, was it? “Shouldn’t we just ask each other about our sexual history or something?”

He grinned. “Oh we’ll get to that too. Now be a good girl and roll up your sleeve.”

She was used to weird shit, given the weirdos she hung around with, and the even weirder weirdos she encountered as Sitara. She rolled up the sleeve of her blouse and turned her head away.

“This won’t hurt a bit.” He chuckled as he tied a strip of rubber around her arm. “Well, this part won’t hurt. And I’ve yet to hear complaints from my other…lovers.”

“I’m not hiring you to be my—” She jumped as the needle pierced her flesh. So much for not hurting. She dared a glance at her arm and was surprised to see him filling a third vial. “What the hell do you need all that blood for?”

He deftly finished and sat again behind the desk. Seeming to ignore her question, he divided the blood from one tube into other tubes and added drops of various liquids. Then, he pulled off his gloves.

“Now, we have time to chat. When was your last sexual encounter, and with whom?”

“Look, I want you as a bodyguard, not a gigolo.” Not that she would kick him out of her bed, but he was taking all the romance out of it.

Without seeming to move, he appeared at her side, clasped her arms and pulled her from the chair. His nostrils flared as he leaned closer. Close enough for her to feel the cold heat from his body. Whoa, that didn’t make any sense. How was heat cold?

“I don’t smell a man on you.”

All she could do was shake her head. She looked into his eyes, dark and mysterious, and couldn’t look away. A feeling of peace, contentment, comfort filled her mind, and body. Hell, she felt fabulous, like she was floating on a warm cloud of massaging brilliance. He lowered his head toward her neck, and she tensed. Shit, this was really happening, and she didn’t care. She wanted to stay on the cloud. But, all she felt was the soft brush of his lips.

“Relax, my sweet. You will know when it’s time.” He gently bit her earlobe and released her arms, letting her settle in the chair. She wanted to cry.

He glanced at the small laboratory atop his desk and smiled. “Yes, very good. Let’s get started.”

Episode 6 by C.A. Szarek

Website: http://www.caszarek.com/

“Can I ask you something?” Abby shivered as Reed rounded the desk and took a seat, those fabulous green eyes intent on the mini-lab instead of her.

She ignored the disappointment that crashed over her. Things had been hot. What was with the cooling off? Was he really going to play scientist, instead of trying to ravish her?

He finally looked up, and cocked his dark head to one side, then nodded. “Sure.”

“You’re a vampire, right?”

Again, he nodded. “Not a secret, the whole town kinda is.”

“Why do you have a limp?”

“The bullet was silver, and we didn’t get it out fast enough.” He shrugged as if it was nothing, but something darted across his handsome face and had Abby muttering an apology.

She jumped when he stroked her cheek and one corner of his mouth shot up. Abby hadn’t seen him move—again. She had to order herself not to lean into his touch.

“It was a long time ago, I assure you my skills aren’t lacking.”

“I wouldn’t have come to you if I thought they were.”

“Right. Well, let’s get started.” Reed rubbed his hands together, as if in anticipation and took his previous seat.

“Get started?” That was the second time he’d said that.

“Yes.” He hit some buttons on a machine. Red lights shone, and a whirring sound filled the room.

“I thought you were going to help me.” Abby winced at the desperation in her tone. Her heart sped up, and she fought the urge to look around. She was safe here—despite the fact she was with the most powerful vampire in town. Reed wouldn’t let anything happen to her, would he?

“No, I won’t.”

“You read minds, too?” Shit, she’d have to guard her thoughts.

He chuckled, and the warmth of it was like a caress.

Abby squirmed in the chair and squeezed her thighs tight. Desire settled low. She wanted him. A stranger. A vampire. Hoped like hell he couldn’t tell.

Reed’s smirk, and the flare of his nostrils said otherwise.

Her cheeks warmed, and he the fact that he’d not answered was palpable.

“You and I should work out just fine,” he murmured. His voice dropped. It was thicker, more appealing somehow.

“What’d you mean?” she whispered.

“I don’t want your money.”

She straightened, her longing shooting to anger, and Abby popped to her stilettoed feet. “You said you’d help.”

A slow, sexy grin bloomed across Reed’s delicious mouth. Fangs peeked out.

Abby’s heartbeat kicked up. She was in so much trouble.

“I will.”

“So what the hell do you want for payment? I’m not a sex slave. It’s not going to be like that, I don’t care who the hell you think you are.” Her voice rose with each demand, and Abby bristled when Reed came to her side and cupped her face.

He dipped down as if he was going to kiss her.

She stiffened, and cursed her disappointment to hell when his mouth stopped millimeters above hers.

“No worries, little seer, you’ll sleep with me.”

His confidence flared her anger, but Abby couldn’t pull from his hold. He wasn’t hurting her, despite the firm grip. “I will not. And you’re still being obtuse.”

Reed laughed. His green eyes twinkled.

Abby glared.

“I needed your blood because it’s how you’re going to pay me. You’re going to bond with me.”

–Paranormaly Yours
                                                Spanish Nights Excerpt:

Makayla had been positive Armand was going to kiss her. Instead he’d set her aside and almost seemed angry that she had trusted him. Their ride back to the mainland had been quiet and almost tense. What had caused the sudden change? The kiss on the cheek? Everything had certainly gone to hell after that, but she could have sworn he wanted her.

She brushed the hair from her face. What did she know about men anyway? It had been two years since her last relationship and it had failed. She had failed. The entire idea was a mistake and she should just chalk it up to a lesson learned and move on. Tears stung her eyes. She thought she saw something good and decent in Armand. Even if only for a one-night stand, she thought he would have catered to her every need, giving her something her past relationships always lacked. Maybe she should just hire the deed done. Women did it all the time now and why not? Their sexual urges were the same as a man’s, only the rules were different.

Half an hour later, they were back at the dock and Armand helped her off the boat.

“I’ll escort you home.”

Really? She pursed her lips. “I’m sure you have lots to do. I can see myself home. Thank you again for a nice day.” She spun and started to walk away, but he was on her heels.

“I wasn’t asking.” He moved in beside her.

Kayla kept her gaze ahead. She could feel the heat rising up her neck. “Suit yourself.” If he wanted to walk with her then fine, but she refused to converse with him. The mixed signals he kept sending were making her dizzy. He went from seductive to demanding to angry with god-knows-what. The confusion running through her brain gave her a headache.

Ten silent minutes later, she finally reached her front door. She slipped the key into the lock and turned the handle. The door opened to reveal a darkened room and she could hardly wait to escape back into it. She wondered if the entire trip was a waste. Good manners had her turning around to face the sexy man who’d towered beside her all day.

“Thank you again. It was lovely.”

His hands gripped her upper arms and his body pinned her against the doorjamb. His lips crashed down on hers. Bruising. Demanding. His tongue pushed passed and swept into her mouth. He tasted of danger and sin and she wanted to swallow him whole. Every lean hard muscle of his chest pushed into her breasts causing them to ache. Her nipples pebbled against her bathing suit and begged to have his hot tongue glide across them. His erection, thick and hard, pressed into her belly. She wanted to touch him, but with her arms pinned at her side she could do nothing except remind herself to breathe.

He consumed her.

Armand nipped her bottom lip then pulled away causing her to moan. Even in the dusk of the evening, she could see the desire in his eyes. It burned her soul.

“Querida, never trust a strange man again. I will be your one exception,” he whispered. “Do you understand?”

She swallowed. Her throat parched from the inferno brewing inside her like a wicked storm. “Y-Yes.”

“Good.” He released her then backed away. “Go inside now. I’ll pick you up tomorrow evening for dinner.”

“O-Okay.”

Kayla stepped past the entry and closed the door behind her. She leaned against the cool wood both to quench the fire that raged within and for support. She brought her fingers to her swollen lips and could almost feel him still pressing against her.

“What the hell just happened?”

Her legs were like Jell-O and her heart raced. She hadn’t expected him to kiss her. Not after the way things had ended. Even in her surprise, her body couldn’t help but respond. She had never been kissed like that before. It had been raw. His heat had seeped through her skin igniting something deep inside her.

“So that’s what it’s like? Holy hell.” She pushed herself off the door and walked across the living room on wobbly legs. She needed a cold shower. Ice cold to be exact.

This is the time of year I love to watch the sappy movies. I like to try something new but always pull out the classics. Here’s a few of my favorites.

King and I

The King And I

Yul Brenner and Debra Kerr

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgVPnWmUqd4

I love the hot and sexy Yul Brenner in this movie. But my favorite scene is when Debra Kerr sings about the thrill of dancing. The song itself, Shall We Dance, is lovely. Yul Brenner is intrigued with her description of dancing with a partner (unique to his culture) and demands she teaches him the steps. There is a part halfway through the scene when Yul realizes something is not right. They are not close enough. The excitement and tension as he eases his hand around her waist and demands to hold her other as he pulls her close… Her chest is heaving in anticipation of the touch and my heart pounds every time I watch it.

Affair to Remember

Affair To Remember

Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN3EIbIYB5M

Deborah Kerr had the best leading men. Cary Grant is the quintessential playboy and an artist. But Deborah makes him work for her love when they meet on a cruise to America. When she meets his grandmother on an shore excursion, she gives in to her heart. He wants to marry her and she doesn’t trust he’s given up his irresponsible ways. So she strikes a deal. In one year, if he still loves her they will meet at the top of the Empire State Building.

SPOILER: Well, of course they are still in love. But on her way to meet him, with the rendezvous in sight, she is hit by a car and paralyzed from the waste down. Heartbroken, Cary continues to paint. One day, someone buys the portrait he did of Deborah. The gallery owner said a woman in wheelchair bought it. When he runs into her at the theater (she is sitting down with a male friend who is about to retrieve her wheelchair. ) She is aloof and he walks away thinking she loves another man. He looks her up to give her his grandmother’s shawl after her death. Granny saw they were a match and willed it to her. He realizes (when she doesn’t get up from the couch) something is amiss. He strolls into her bedroom and finds the painting. The expression on his face when he realizes why she did not meet him is heart-wrenching. The following scene when they are reunited makes me cry happy tears every time I watch it.

The Lake House

The Lake House

Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5djX9LEb0yI

Spoiler: Can I just say that Keanu Reeves gets sexier as he ages? This movie involved an odd type of time travel. Keanu designed a lake house and two years later Sandra rents it. The mailbox has magical powers allows them to exchange letters. They find a way to meet but Sandra finds out that he is hit by a car (yes, again) and dies crossing the street to meet her. She sends an urgent letter canceling the meeting and asking him to wait another two years. They will meet at the lake house. The final scene, when they meet, is delicious. They walk towards each other slowly, looking one another over. She says, “You waited for me.” And all patience flies out the window. He grabs her and kisses her like a starving man. I have the last ten minutes of this DVR’d and watch it every so often to remind myself why I write romance.

The Secret Bliss of Calliope Ipswich by Marcia Lynn McClure

secret blissThe Secret Bliss of Calliope Ipswich by Marcia Lynn McClure

“Oh! Do link arms with me, Calliope,” Blanche whispered, her brown eyes widening with apprehension. She took Calliope’s arm, tightly linking it with her own. “The old Mulholland house still gives me the willies every time I walk past it. I hate to think on what might have gone on inside. It’s truly terrifyin’!”
“Oh, don’t be silly, Blanche,” Calliope said, feigning calm. “Poor Prudence’s lunacy…it’s sad. And besides, her fiendish acts were not committed inside the house. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s just…it’s just a sad, empty building.” Calliope Ipswich felt the hypocrite, however, as an uncomfortable shiver of residual dread and unease shuttered down her spine,

More than six months had passed since the All Hollow’s Eve when the dangerous state of Prudence Mulholland’s fracturing mind had been revealed to the townsfolk of Meadowlark Lake. And now, each time Calliope thought of poor Prudence and her family, not only did her heart ache for their family’s unhappy lot but a chill of lingering horror rippled through her being.
In truth, at times Calliope wondered if it had all been simply a bad dream—a nightmare. But it hadn’t. It really had happened—all of it.
