 About the Book

Galena is just like every other elf, enslaved by the powerful Rau. Once a beautiful and powerful race, the elves has been reduced to slave labor in the mines of Rau. Galena grew up hearing the stories of old about a sword, when wielded by the right elf, ending Rau’s tyranny. Unsure if she believes these stories, she finds herself plunged into a world unfamiliar to her, hunted by Rau for her unnatural magical abilities. Will she find the sword promised to her people? Or will she fall prey to the idea of a sword that doesn’t exist?

Character Interview

I’d like to welcome part of the cast from Mira’s view, Erin Elliott’s debut YA fantasy novel. Galena, Elenio and Tark have joined me for an informal Q&A today. They have promised to behave but we’ll see.

Do you have any scars, tattoos, piercings? What do they mean to you?

Tark: We all have the marks of Rau on our hands and feet. They are tattoos that keep us from using our magic, placed on us by mauks for Rau. If most elves even think about magic, they get headaches, but Galena is different.

Galena: I’ve been able to use small bits of magic for at least the last couple of years. I didn’t know what that meant until Rau started sending his torlics to hunt me down. Now, I find myself in the middle of the stories we heard about as children. Tark, Elenio, and myself are on a quest now to find the Sword of Lumina, promised to us by the lone goddess, Mira.

Do you have any siblings? If so, what are their names and ages?

Galena: My brother Tark, is the oldest at 34 and my other brother Melan, is just behind him at 32.

Elenio: I’m an only child.

Who has been your greatest influence (parent, friend, idol)? Why?

Galena: My father. He taught me everything that I know and encouraged me to free the elf race.

Tark: my sister, Galena. Despite everything going against us, she is still determined to free the elves. Nothing gets her down.

Elenio: my promised one, Galena. She is the strongest elf that I’ve ever known. And it doesn’t hurt that she’s awesome with a sword. Total turn on.

Where did you grow up? How do you feel about it now?

Galena: All of us grew up in the small village of Tomeka. It’s on the northern most point of Tomiro. I liked growing up there. It was quiet, my whole family was there; I had a lot of good memories there.

Elenio: Would I happen to be one of those memories. (Addressing Galena) Galena: You’re at the top of the list you conceited brat.

Tark: I plan on going back after this quest, if we live through it that is. My commitment partner and daughter are still there.

Do you have any pets?

Galena: I recently acquired a ferret on my trip. They’re supposed to have vanished when the elves fell. What can I say, I’m just lucky or Mira is playing a mean trick on me.

Tark: I have a daughter, does that count?

Elenio: Putting up with Galena is enough of a chore for me. (Galena smacks Elenio in back of the head)

What is currently your biggest responsibility / commitment?

Galena: Hands down finding the Sword of Lumina and destroying Rau. Tark: Keeping Galena safe.

Elenio: Keeping Galena from hurting herself too badly. (Galena knocks Elenio to the ground and proceeds to punch him a couple of times, which Elenio is too busy laughing to defend himself properly.)

Who is your biggest rival / enemy?

All three in unison: Rau.

Galena: Haulua comes in a close second though. He’s the god that created Rau specifically with the intent of bringing down the elves. Stupid, paranoid god.

 What is your greatest talent?

Galena: I rock with the sword, plus, unlike the other elves, I can use magic.

Tark: I’m pretty good with the sword as well.

Elenio: I pretty good at making Galena mad. (Runs from the room cackling laughing with Galena hot on his heels)

What are you the most hopeless at?

Tark: Keeping those two from picking on each other.

What, if anything, do you do to keep fit and healthy?

Tark: Training with the sword on a daily basis generally keeps one pretty fit. Running from torlics also does a nice job of keeping me in shape.

How did the two (or however many) of you meet?

Galena: I grew up with Elenio. He’s been my best friend since birth.

Elenio: I think I’m the only one who can handle her (holds hands up in truce.) I got to know and like Tark through Galena.

Tark: And that pretty much sums up my answer.

What were you doing before you met? How was your life different?

Galena: Training for the day that one of the elves were called to find the Sword of Lumina. I just didn’t think it would be me.

Elenio: Galena convinced her father to train me as well so she wouldn’t have to do it alone.

Tark: I had completed my training and was working in the village and building my own family.

Galena: Now, we’re always together on this quest. It’s been kind of stressful and I’m still not completely sure that this sword actually exist.

Tark: It does, why else would Father train us?

Galena: Because he was a mindless elf like all of our ancestors. (Tark rolls his eyes).

Elenio: Other than the running for our lives and Galena constantly trying to give us heart attacks, this trip has been great. What?! (Addressing Galena) You have!

About the Author

I am a preschool teacher in a Washington Court House, Ohio. I am a graduate of Washington City Schools and I currently live in Circleville, Ohio. I have a wonderful husband and between the two of us, we have five children, four boys and one girl. We also have a wide variety of animals living with us. Everything from the more common pets like dogs and cats to more exotic like cockatiel and cockatoos. I love watching football in the fall and swimming in the summer. Christmas is awesome and without a doubt, my favorite time of year.

Believe it or not, I did not like reading until about the fourth grade when I finally found a genre that really sparked my interest—fantasy. From there it became a passion of mine and often times the perfect way to escape the difficult times in everyday life. Mythical creatures are another love of mine so I combined my two loves and set forth to accomplish what I have always wanted to do: write books for everyone to love.

A few words of wisdom from Nancy…

What inspired you to write your current novel?

Visiting National Parks became a recent passion. My husband and I had just returned from the Grand Canyon. A PBS series about National Parks was going to air and we decided to watch. My mind drifted to another place. I began thinking about the recent park visit, the history I just watched and how fun it might be to have a young girl move between the past and present. I had no intention of writing a novel. So it literally happened overnight.

Is your novel part of a series? Can you tell me a little about the world you’ve created?

Yes, it is. The first book is Waiting for Dusk, followed by Call of the Canyon. Stealing Time was just recently released.

Katie lives in a small town in present day Ohio. Her dream world is something quite different. She travels back in time to the Grand Canyon in 1927. She works as a Harvey Girl at El Tovar Restaurant at the canyon. Because she’s been there on vacation, she has difficulty separating what’s real and what isn’t after she wakes up. She’s determined to figure things out after spotting her father at the canyon as a young man and realizing there’s more to it than just a dream.

What do you think the reader will enjoy the most about your novel?

If they read all three novels, I think they will discover more and more about time travel and how it works in this particular series. They may like that a book helps a person travel through time, not a machine. The Grand Canyon in 1927 is the only place in the past where the book takes people. From there, they must travel to other places just like anyone else. Since the travelers from the present visit the same place year after year, history could change. It’s hard to be an observer and not a participant.

What was the hardest part of writing this novel?

I find writing descriptions of scenery, clothing and people’s appearance are the hardest. Searching for the right words without going into endless details is difficult. What I see in my mind and then try to put on paper isn’t the easiest thing for me to do. Then I tell myself, the reader has just enough information to picture the scene as they want. It’s a balancing act.

What is your favorite quote?

I have more than one. I will share my top three.

A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

― Dr. SeussHorton Hears a Who!

“Doctor Who: You want weapons? We’re in a library. Books are the best weapon in the world. This room’s the greatest arsenal we could have. Arm yourself!

(from Tooth and Claw in Season 2)”
― Russell T. Davies

“If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember that this whole thing was started with a dream and a mouse.”

― Walt Disney Company

If you had a time machine, what time period would you travel to?

Love this question! No doubt about it, I would have to go to the Grand Canyon in 1927 and see how I did. I would eat at El Tovar and have a Harvey Girl wait on me. I’d try to peek in the back kitchen to see what’s going on. I’d run to Kolb Studio to see the real Emery and Ellsworth Kolb and hope I’d get a glimpse of Drew! I’d visit all the places and trails mentioned in the book and compare them to how they look today. Hopefully not too much of the Grand Canyon has changed.

Where it all began

Book 1

waiting for dusk

Read a book.

Fall asleep.

Meet a boy.

Is it real or just a dream?

Katie’s everyday life suddenly turns exciting when she travels back in time and meets the boy of her dreams. Thinking of nothing else, willing to leave the real world behind, she’s determined to find out if it’s all a dream or not. Returning again and again, Katie almost has her answers until one day her precious book goes missing.

Excerpt:

Katie glanced over at the hotel, and leaning against the wall in the shadows was a boy about her age. She got up and walked toward him. She’d show him. Who was he to laugh at her? Look at all the eggs in this basket. She didn’t break one during her getaway.

The closer she got to him, the more clearly she saw him. He wasn’t a boy but almost a man. The cliché “tall, dark and handsome” fit him. His dark brown, wavy hair was long on the top, and shorter on the sides. A strand of hair fell into his eyes. His eyes sparkled and locked onto hers. Her legs felt like mush, and she stumbled. He reached out and caught her.

“Are you okay?” His voice was kind, concerned.

Katie tried to gain her composure. “Yes, yes. Are you one of the vacationers? Because if you are, I shouldn’t be talking to you. It’s against the rules.” Rules? What am I thinking? It’s my dream after all.

“No. No I’m not. I work here at the park doing an internship. My name is Andrew, by the way. Andrew Martin.”

“I’m Kathryn, but everyone calls me Katie.”

Andrew’s brows crossed. “Katie doesn’t seem to suit you. I think I shall call you Kate.”

Katie thought Andrew was a little full of himself, deciding a new name for her.

“Then I shall call you Drew.” She shot back.

“Drew, it is then!”

Kate found him charming. He had a strong laugh and a beautiful smile. It was hard not to stare at him—something she was good at, according to her mother. She felt she would never get tired of staring at him. She wanted to reach out and brush back the piece of hair that fell over his forehead.

Katie blinked and brought herself back to earth. “I need to get these eggs into the kitchen.”

“By all means, don’t let me hold you up. It was very nice to meet you, Kathryn, Kate.”

“And you, too, Andrew…Drew.” Katie started for the door.

“Kate. Are you staying at the boarding house by chance?”

“Yes. Yes, I am.” She blushed and went inside.

Book 2

call of the canyon

Two Lives…

Two Worlds…

Heartbreak awaits.

Call of the Canyon, second of the Waiting for Dusk series, continues the dramatic story of Kate Roberts and Drew Kelly. New challenges face the couple when Drew joins Kate in the present. Nothing is easy. Tyson’s still their nemesis, causing trouble whenever he can. Carl, Kate’s friend and neighbor, moves back home to Ohio and creates unexpected problems at the canyon. A wedding, a tragic accident, and a family broken by scandal affect both the past and present. And in the end, Kate may pay the ultimate price.

About the Author

nancy author pic

After a great career in teaching, Nancy found a second calling as a writer. Ohio is her home but she loves to travel the U.S. Her debut young adult novel, Waiting for Dusk, was a surprise to her as much as it was to her family. Watching a PBS series on National Parks, her mind wandered to another place and that is where the characters of Katie and Andrew were born. Call of the Canyon and Stealing Time continue their story. The Swedish influences found in the books came from her mother whose parents emigrated from Sweden.

Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, Nancy currently resides in Mentor, Ohio with her husband and their college-age son.

Excerpt:

Late May, 1860 near Carson City, Nevada

If anyone had asked me to describe fifteen, I’d tell them it was near an impossible age. Everyone expected me to act like a lady and wear dresses all the time. I had to pin up my hair instead of letting it swing in the breeze in two long braids. Ladies didn’t run around without a care in the world, nor could they allow the sun to tan their skin.

Being a lady stinks.

What I wanted deep in my heart was to wear pants and train horses from sunup to sunset. No one in my family listened whenever I begged them to let me help with training the horses, so a lady I was. They told me to get about my chores. To stay out of trouble, I did those awful, everyday, jobs but with hate in my heart. That was all I, Abigail Grace Weston, faced—never-ending, boring housework day in and day out.

I would never get a break from this boredom, as a lady in the nineteenth century never had a chance to think for herself, nor did she really run her home. A man always took care of a lady. This was one of the strictest rules I learned at an early age. No one ever let me forget it, no matter what dreams I had, like the forbidden desire to one day becoming a Pony Express rider.
