Into the Devil’s Den – Snared by Their Own Lies
by Ellen W. Martin
GENRE: Suspense Thriller
BLURB:
For twenty-years Sam Steele lived with a lie gnawing at his conscience — for twenty-years his only child believed her mother was dead. Without warning his ex-wife springs from the ashes of the past and reaches out to him in his capacity as a veteran Immigration Custom Enforcement agent.
When Sam’s ex dumps a father’s living nightmare into his lap, he must choose between doing his duty as a law enforcer and jeopardizing his cherished relationship with his daughter. Circumstances beyond his control leave him no choice. Before he can seek forgiveness, TERRI ANNE disappears. Sam neglects his duties as an ICE agent and becomes obsessed in finding her. In the wake of his search he unravels a trail of murder, illegal Green Card marriages, and unveils a jihadist’s plot to launch a terror attack on American soil.
INTO THE DEVIL’S DEN – SNARED BY THEIR OWN LIES weaves a tangled tale of suspense, murder, and treachery. Each twisted circumstance is triggered by that one well-intended lie Sam Steele told his child — a lie that mushrooms into several more falsehoods and leaves multiple lives dangling by a single thread. The daunting task of facing the truth and the race against time pushes ICE agent Sam Steele’s integrity to the limit.
EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt):
When Jaali reached the edge of the trailer, he stopped, stared into the moonless night. All the bodies once jammed inside the tractor-trailer were now scattered somewhere into the darkness; they were invisible to the naked eye leaving him alone somewhere along the Mexican and United States border.
He hopped to the ground with his duffle bag slung over his shoulder, stumbled for a brief moment, but managed to stay upright. The darkness outside was nothing compared to the darkness of the last three or four hours. Infinite stars glistened in the sky like a blanket of diamonds spread above him. A lonesome wail echoed in the distance accompanied by the melodic hum of locusts and the screech of a nearby owl. The desert creatures’ songs added a serenity he hadn’t enjoyed since he was a young boy.
Jaali took a deep cleansing breath. Pure crisp air perfumed with the pungent aroma of sagebrush bathed his lungs and washed away the burnt scent of Molotov cocktails, TNT and other explosives’ smells that had permanently taken residence in his nostrils long ago.
In the distance above the rolling hills, bursts of multicolored lights flashed, and then disappeared. With narrowed eyes, Jaali curled his upper lip, spat on the ground. Enjoy your independence while you can, infidels, he thought. My brothers and I will soon awaken a fear hidden deep within your souls — a fear that will shake the ground beneath your privileged feet. What a pleasure it will be to watch your beloved Fourth of July blow up in your face.

Good morning, Ellen. I added the book to my wish-list ans hope to be reading the story soon. Is the story strictly a stand-alone or part of a series?
Hi Beatrice
No this is a stand-alone. The only series I wrote was a historical fiction entitled SONS OF CUBA – Prelude to Revolution and SONS OF CUBA – Homecoming. Thank you so much for asking and I hope you enjoy the book.

What do you do when you’re in a creative rut? Where do you get your inspiration from?
Hi Melissa
I must have missed this post for some reason on Monday. So sorry it’s taken me so long to write back. As far as your question, sometimes I think I’m in a perpetual creative rut and my muse is without a doubt fickle. Something needs to trigger my imagination to kickstart me.
When I started writing it was purely for “my eyes only” and I only wrote when I became passionate about a subject. My first endeavor was a two book series SONS OF CUBA – Prelude to Revolution and the Book II SONS OF CUBA – Homecoming. In 1999 when little Elian Gonzalez was plucked out of the waters near the Florida Coast and became a pawn between the US and Cuban governments, I started doing research on Cuba and Fidel Castro and found him a fascinating character. I based SONS OF CUBA on many of real events in his life, but all the characters are fictional. In fact not only was I surprised I actually wrote an entire book, but it turned into a 700 plus page historical fiction book which eventually became a two book series. I played with the book for over 10 plus years and it was finally published last year.
My true passion is suspense/thrillers. The inspiration for INTO THE DEVIL’S DEN occurred when a couple of my friend’s daughter became involved with foreign men seeking green cards and my friends feared they would marry just so the men would get their green cards. That was when the fun began and my imagination was off to the races.
Last spring during the early quarantine because of Covid, unfortuately many (including me) spent too much time glued to the TV. I became so disenchanted with politics and politicians, I wrote SHATTER LOYALTIES, the story located in New Orleans – a city I love and is full of some much beauty, mystique and wonderful characters. I hope to have this one on the market by fall 2021.
Hope this tells you a little about me and what I write.

I liked the cover too!
What do you most enjoy about writing?
Hi Cary
Thank you for asking. I most enjoy reading, watching and now writing suspense/thriller. Once I get a plot idea, I love to put my characters in impossible situations, weave in as many twists and turns as plausible and hopefully drop in some surprises. However, the strange journey for my writing is the first two books I wrote (which are a 2-book series) are a historical fiction about Cuba entitled SONS OF CUBA – Prelude to Revolution and SONS OF CUBA – Homecoming. For excerpts for all three of my books, take a look at my website https://booksbyellen.
Thank you so much for the question. I really appreciate the opportunity to tell you a little about me and my “babies”.
Ellen
