A debutante’s rude awakening…

Lady Jennet Gordon has led a charmed life until her first Season. Rumors about her father’s finances circulate, followed by a tragic but suspicious accident, leaving Jenny and her mother a modest widow’s dowery to survive on with no immediate heir. Two years later, secluded on their Northumberland estate, a distant cousin is found to assume the title. Jenny fears that the heir—known in the shipping industry as the Hangman—will evict her and her mother from their home. Surely, he would not throw them out at Christmastide?

A driven man with a fierce reputation…

Barnabus Gordon is the grandson of a pirate and the son of a privateer. His grandfather, the younger son of a titled family, refused to accept the traditional careers offered him and took to the sea. When Barnabus’s father is killed early in the war, he vows to legitimize the family business. Using the cutthroat lessons learned in his childhood from two generations of rebellious Gordons, he buys out shipowners in financial distress and accrues his own fleet. When Barnabus learns he is the new Earl of Townsen, a title that is debt-ridden and comes with two penniless females.

A collision beneath the mistletoe…

The gruffly handsome Gordon is determined to settle the issue of his newly acquired English estate and return to the sea. Yet when he arrives at Brierdene Hall, he discovers two caring women and a forgotten longing for love and family. With both of them hiding their growing affection—and past secrets—Lady Jennet worries her feelings for Barnabus will appear too convenient. He fears moving forward because of their familial ties. Until the Town lady and seafaring brute find themselves sixes and sevens under a mistletoe. One kiss ignites a Yule log of passion and holiday magic that refuses to be extinguished.

I was immediately captivated by this story. Brigid quickly gets into the heart of the reader. Aubrey Wynne has long been one of my favorite authors. This book doesn't disappoint. This author has won awards for humor and this book shines brighter with the humorous lines.

A brilliant regency novel. The plot flows in a smooth fashion. The characters are well crafted. Even secondary characters are fully developed, giving great depth to this book. The drama is heartfelt. The actions scenes are suspenseful. The romance is, at times, sweet and, at times, very spicy.

Recommended to every fan of Regency Romance. Recommended also to fans of historical fiction. This book should be a sure-fire bestseller.

Reviews

HISTORICAL/REGENCY:  This story opens with a tragedy that involves Nicolas and his new wife, Alice, who commits suicide on their wedding night. Five years later, Nicolas, who is now the Earl of Darby, is still carrying the guilt of her death, and is seeking redemption by hunting the man who is indirectly responsible for her choice that fateful night in 1814. His bluestocking little sister, Mattie, is about to start her first season in the marriage mart, and one of his best friend’s little sister, Hannah, is as well. His friend asks Nicolas to keep an eye on Hannah, and to stay away from her as well. Naturally, that’s not exactly what occurs.

This is a relatively short audiobook; however, the author gives each character plenty of depth and conflict, so the listener doesn’t feel shortchanged. There is one incident toward the end of the audiobook where Hannah comes across as naïve and lacking ‘street smarts,’ but everywhere else in this story she seems older than her years. She helps Nicolas move beyond his guilt from his first wife, and she is able to help Mattie ‘bloom’ under her care and attention. The pacing and the tension levels seem to be exactly right for this story. This delightful audiobook uses the themes of redemption and healing, and the power of love and acceptance throughout!

Harry Frost does an excellent job of narrating this audiobook. He is able to differentiate between each of the different characters, and provide a range of accents within the story. Other than the aunt, who often sounded masculine, all of the other voices were believable and appropriate to the story. The recording was clean and crisp sounding, and the pauses were an appropriate length, albeit on the long side. Nevertheless, it is an engaging story!

Carey Sullivan - InD'tale Magazine - 4 1/2 stars (audiobook edition)

REGENCY:  Nicholas, the Earl of Darby, is haunted by the death of his wife five years ago on Christmas Eve. Since then, he has joined the Wicked Earls' Club and developed the reputation of a rake. Hannah Pendleton is excited to be visiting London to take part in the entertainment. She hopes to meet her childhood crush. Instead she discovers fate has different plans when she meets the Earl of Darby. His sister is also entering her first season, and the girls' friendship brings Hannah in regular contact with Nicholas. Although she's aware of his reputation, she is certain that underneath the public mask he wears, he seeks true love. Despite his belief that he is no good for Hannah, he cannot resist her. But he has a vow to complete and an enemy to defeat--an enemy willing to destroy Hannah unless Nicholas is willing to risk all.

"Earl of Darby" is a pleasant, quick read for any afternoon! Both Hannah and Nicholas are quite likable and deserving of the happiness they find together. Hannah's Aunt Bertie is a delightful character and almost steals the show. The story begins with the tragic death of Nicholas' wife and then jumps forward five years. At the start there were a number of characters and relationships that were difficult to keep straight. It takes time for Hannah and Nicholas to meet, but once they do, the story settles into an easy pace. Moreover, the climax and final scene on Christmas Day provide a roller-coaster ride of emotions. "Earl of Darby" offers romance, villainy and redemption to satisfy any romance reader!

Her late husband’s cousin first unwittingly and then unflinchingly stirs within her an emotion she has never experienced.   However, in the wake of treason and rebellion, love’s choice may inevitably break someone’s heart.

Aubrey Wynne’s epic historical romance bedazzles as much as it leaves the reader breathless! Her intricate details lavish the reader with picturesque landscapes, scrumptious dialogue, leaving nothing too small to define.  The story however does not overplay the settings, being mindful of its main characters’ nuances, while providing interesting and empathetic secondary characters as well. Nothing is neglected in this charming, albeit formulaic romance.  “Rhapsody and Rebellion” promises to delight all of Ms. Wynne’s fans, and is certain to gain her many more faithful followers!

Kimberly Gunvaldson - InD'tale Magazine - 5 Stars

"Man, talk about some sweet heat. Aubrey never ceases to amaze me with her style, perception and insight. This little jewel blew me away with all the twists and turns along with a few glitches here and there make for one enjoyable experience. The characters and their personalities are so realistic and believable it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The explosive chemistry between the two main characters as they got to know each other as the story unfolds. The scenes are so graphic and detailed it's easy to see each scenario as it plays out perfectly. Aubrey wields her words as skillfully and precise as a surgeon with his scalpel. I love the depth and progress of the plot as well as the secondary characters. Aubrey did a magnificent job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Fantastic job Aubrey, thanks for sharing this little guy with us." -Amazon Reviewer Kaye

HISTORICAL/REGENCY:  After the death of her first husband, Eliza’s father is determined to get her married off again in order to save himself from financial ruin. When he threatens not only her life, but also the life of her daughter, Eliza knows she must escape from his clutches. When Lord Pendleton first comes across Eliza, saving her and her carriage from a band of thieves, he is taken in by her courage and determination. As the two spend more time in one another’s company, Lord Pendleton wonders if Eliza is the one he has been waiting for — and if so, how he can win her heart.

Readers looking for a sweet Regency romance will enjoy Eliza and Lord Pendleton’s love story. The descriptions of the countryside and the time-period are just enough to place readers in the right frame of mind. Eliza’s strength and grit will draw one into the story, and will keep their attention until the conclusion. The overall plot and character development would have benefited from a longer novel, as some aspects are rushed or overlooked. In the end, those who enjoy a good love story set in the 1800’s will appreciate Eliza and Lord Pendleton’s journey.

With a soothing voice and steady cadence, Mr. Frost is a narrator who allows listeners to sit back and sink into the story. His accent and deliverance match well with the English setting and Regency time-period. The only real flaw in Mr. Frost’s performance is that he needs slightly more distinction between the different characters, especially amongst the female characters. For anyone in search of good audiobook, with an intriguing plot, “A Wicked Earl’s Widow” will not disappoint. -- Amy Cefoldo - InD'Tale Magazine - 4 Stars (audiobook edition)
